Top Five Negroni Recipes Right Now

The Negroni, a bitter three-ingredient Italian cocktail, has become a classic, sitting alongside the Manhattan and Martini in the pantheon of beloved and often modified cocktails.

The Classic Negroni cocktail was invented by Count Camillo Negroni at Caffè Casoni in Florence, Italy, in 1919. The cocktail was created after Count Negroni requested his Americano cocktail be made a bit stronger. The Americano is a mixture of soda water, Campari, and Vermouth, and in this instance, the soda water was swapped out for Gin.

Negroni

The classic Negroni calls for a mixture of Gin, Vermouth, and Campari all poured in equal measures. The mix is a delicious crisp, sweet and bitter cocktail.

Ingredients

  • 1 Ounce Gin
  • 1 Ounce Campari
  • 1 Ounce sweet Vermouth
  • 1 Garnish: orange peel

Instructions

  1. Add the Campari, Gin, and Sweet Vermouth to a mixing glass filled with ice, and stir until the cocktail is well-chilled.
  2. Pour into a rocks glass filled with large ice cubes.
  3. Garnish with an orange peel.

Negroni Sbagliato

Even though the name Negroni Sbagliato translates to “Wrong Negroni,” this variation on the classic Negroni is nothing short of sophisticated. The Sbagliato Negroni swaps the gin ingredient for a sparkling Italian wine, which turns it into the perfect effervescent aperitivo. This recipe gives quantities for a large batch, but it can be scaled down to a single serving if you’re not preparing it for a group.

Ingredients

  • 1 ounce sweet vermouth
  • 1 ounce Campari
  • Handful assorted seasonal fruit
  • 1 ounce prosecco
  • Garnish: grated cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Add the Vermouth and liqueur to mixing jug and add large ice cubes.
  2. Add the handful of fruit and top it up with prosecco.
  3. Gently stir and garnish with freshly grated cinnamon.

White Negroni

The standard template of base spirit, aromatized wine, and bitter liqueur holds in this version of the Negroni, except a bitter French aperitif and blanc Vermouth are introduced in place of sweet Vermouth and red-hued Campari, making the cocktail lighter in color. Suze, the French aperitif, can taste abrasive on its own, so the balance of a full-bodied and sweet blanc fortified wine—Lillet blanc, specifically—is essential for balance.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 ounces gin
  • 1 ounce Lillet blanc
  • 1/2 ounce Suze gentian liqueur
  • Garnish: lemon twist

Instructions

  1. Add the Gin, Lillet blanc and Suze into a mixing glass with ice and stir for 15 to 20 seconds until well-chilled.
  2. Strain into a glass over fresh ice.
  3. Garnish with a lemon twist.

Mezcal Negroni

One of the most in fashion spirits in the cocktail world right now is mezcal. Mezcal makes a perfect combination with sweet Vermouth and Campari in a Negroni. Mezcal has a rich, smoky, earthy profile and goes head-to-head with the boldness of the Campari. The Mezcal Negroni gives a complex and flavorful expression of the classic Negroni cocktail.

Ingredients

  • 1 ounce mezcal
  • 1 ounce Campari
  • 1 ounce sweet vermouth
  • Garnish: orange half-wheel

Instructions

  1. Add the mezcal, Campari, and sweet Vermouth to a mixing glass with ice and stir until well-chilled
  2. Pour into a rocks glass over one big ice cube.
  3. Garnish with an orange half-wheel.

Bold-Brew Negroni

The cold-brew Negroni is the ultimate warming pick-me-up. Created in New York by bartending professional Pam Wiznitzer, this Negroni recipe twist infuses Campari with coffee before then being made in the traditional way of three equal ingredients.

Ingredients

  • 1 ounce cold-brew-coffee-infused Campari liqueur
  • 1 ounce gin
  • 1 ounce sweet vermouth
  • Garnish: orange twist

Instructions

  1. Add the cold brew coffee-infused Campari, Gin, and Sweet Vermouth into a mixing glass with ice and stir until well-chilled.
  2. Strain into a tumbler over a big ice cube.
  3. Add an orange twist over the drink and drop it into the glass.
